Platform Chair and Staffordshire University Associate Professor of Film Peter Rudge has been recognised as an International Creative Industries Leader by one of the worlds’ leading innovation festivals.

Held each year in downtown Pittsburgh, Create started as a grass-roots festival of art and technology but now in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University, ZERO1 Silicon Valley and the Pittsburgh Technology Council, Create Festival has grown to become one of the leading innovation festivals in the world.

The June 2018 festival will be discussing subjects such as the future of creative cities and the economies of creative technology.

Peter was invited by the founding director of the festival Dr Kim Chestney after hearing of his work at Staffordshire University and as the Founder and Chair of Platform, the Moving Image Cluster for Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire.

Peter has been invited to be a speaker and panelist as one of the festival’s ‘International Creative Industry Leaders’.

Festival Director Kim Chestney said:

Peter said: “It’s always great to be recognised for your work and to receive a personal invitation from the festival director was very special. This will be a first time at the festival for me and I’m really excited to be speaking at the event, being a panellist and taking part as a workshop mentor. Rachel Shenton Silent Child Oscar Nomination

Oscar Nominated

Stoke-on-Trent actress and writer Rachel Shenton and director Chris Overton have landed an Oscar nomination for their critically acclaimed movie, The Silent Child.

The Silent Child has been nominated in the best live action short film category of the 2018 Oscars and tells the story of a profoundly deaf four-year-old girl, Libby, who is living a silent life until she is taught to communicate using sign language by a caring social worker played by Rachel.

Rachel wrote the film because of her own personal experiences and described the subject “as very close to my heart” due to her Dad losing his hearing very suddenly when she was a teenager and witnessing the first-hand effects that hearing loss can have.

Rachel learned British Sign Language aged 16 and has campaigned to increase awareness of deafness ever since.

Rachel has previously appeared in a number of British television series and films including Hollyoaks, Holby City, and Waterloo Road and more recently made her American TV debut on ABC Family drama Switched at Birth as Lily Summers.

The Oscars will be announced at the award ceremony on 4th March at the Dolby Theatre, Hollywood.
